Shea Moisture Curl & Style Milk Review

I know I have been a bit absent for awhile on here.  I was finishing up doing makeup for my most recent community theater endeavor as well as recovering from an on and off cold which finally settled down into my chest causing bronchitis.  I promise I will post more often as I get better.

Anyway, on to the post.  Those of you who have been following my blog since it started will know that I have been a bit obsessed with the Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner.  I mean, the stuff has been such a life saver for my dry, frizzy, parched ringlets.  I assumed the rest of their stuff would be similar, but I was proven wrong when I purchased the gel souffle and hated it.  I waited a bit on reviewing the curl and style milk due to mixed results.  It's been a bit over a month of using it now, so I think it's safe to pass judgement.

The milk has the same scent as the gel souffle: Coconut & Hibiscus.  Now, I love both coconuts and hibiscus flowers, so I find it rather odd that I do not like the smell of this line.  It is such a cloyingly sweet smell that it turns my stomach.

That said, the milk is good at nourishing my hair.  I use a 3 step system to styling that includes a thin serum, a thicker creme, and a gel.  Usually this system helps control frizz, give definition, and yet keep my curls soft and not crunchy.  This milk is thick enough to prevent frizz, but not so thick as to cause a ton of product buildup.  There are days it doesn't do so great, like rainy days where my hair just seems to frizz no matter what I do, but I guess that can't be helped.  The product is curly girl approved so it is free of silicones, sulfates, parabens, alcohols, etc.

I wish I could say that I will purchase it again, but as the smell really gets to me, I will not be doing so.  I'm hoping I can find a similar product which causes less of a gag reflex.  What are your thoughts?  Do you like this style milk, or do you prefer something else?  Let me know in the comments below!

  1. I commented last night, but apparently my ipod was being a derp. I haven't tried the milk, but I love the curling gel souffle!! I use it every day and it consistently gives me good results!! What didn't you like about it? I will admit the smell is a little strong, but I'm allergic to synthetic fragrances so I'm just happy to smell like anything that's not "UNSCENTED" haha!!

  2. It made my hair incredibly greasy, which is hard to do since my hair sucks up all kinds of moisture and it takes days to get greasy. It also didn't have the consistency of a gel, more like water. It was really weird. I tend to like very herbal or floral scents rather than fruity or sweet.
